Senator Burris Announces FEMA Funding to Illinois Communities to Combat Homelessness, Hunger and Economic Hardships

WASHINGTON, D.C. - January 7, 2010 - (RealEstateRama) — United States Senator Roland W. Burris today announced that the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program (EFSP) will award Illinois a total of $9,000,170 to increase efforts to provide services, food and shelter for the hungry, homeless, and individuals struggling during the economic crisis.  The EFSP is a federal program administered by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

“I am pleased to see that funds to fight hunger and homelessness during this dire economic time are being directed to areas throughout Illinois,” said Senator Burris. “These funds will assist in alleviating some of the economic difficulties among Illinoisans while we continue down the road to economic recovery.”

A total of $200 million in Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program awards will be allocated to communities all across the country for FY 2010.

EFSP funds were first authorized by Congress in 1983 and are appropriated annually under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act.  With the FY 2010 allocation, more than $3.6 billion in federal aid will have been disbursed through the EFSP since its beginning twenty-seven years ago.  The grant will fund assistance to support social service agencies in cities and counties across the country to help feed and shelter the Nation?s hungry and homeless.  EFSP funds are used to supplement food, shelter, rent, mortgage, and utility assistance programs for people with non-disaster related emergencies.

The EFSP is administered by a national board of voluntary agencies and chaired by FEMA.  Member agencies of the National Board include a diverse cross section of social service organizations.  The National Board qualifies local jurisdictions for annual EFSP awards based on criteria involving current population, unemployment, and poverty levels.  Awards are then disbursed to local nonprofit organizations and government agencies in the eligible jurisdictions.
