WASHINGTON, D.C. – April 16, 2010 – (RealEstateRama) — Today, United States Senator Roland W. Burris announced that the Department of Veterans of Affairs (VA) is awarding a $585,000 grant from the American Recovery Reinvestment Act for the construction of a new bus and ambulance garage at the Quincy Veterans Home in Quincy, IL.

This VA grant from the Recovery Act will support 65 percent of the total cost of the construction.  The overall cost is $900,000 for the new garage.

Senator Burris and the Democratic-led Congress passed the 2009 American Reinvestment and Recovery Act that was signed into law by President Obama in February of 2009.

“As a member of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee, I am pleased to see that Recovery Act funds are being allocated to support the well-being of our men and women in uniform at home,” said Senator Burris.  “It is vital that we provide first-class services and facilities for our veterans, and these Recovery Act funds help ensure that veterans in Illinois and across the country are given the utmost care they deserve.”

The Quincy Veterans Home is the oldest and biggest of Illinois’ Veterans homes.  It provides 683 beds, intermediate and skilled care, and a special unit for patients with Alzheimer?s disease and related issues.

Last year, the VA allocated nearly $2.7 billion to Illinois to serve more than 803,000 veterans who reside in the state.  The VA operates medical centers in North Chicago, Chicago (Jesse Brown and Hines medical centers), Danville and Marion, with outpatient clinics and Vet Centers throughout Illinois.

The VA has directed $1.4 billion in Recovery Act funds to issues affecting veterans, from improvements in state cemeteries, the installation of energy-saving infrastructure in VA medical centers and the hiring of extra staff to process Veterans’ claims for VA benefits.
