Chicago Real Estate Consultants Win Prestigious Ballard Award from The Counselors of Real Estate

CHICAGO, IL – May 30, 2013 – (RealEstateRama) — Three executives from Clarion Associates, Inc., Chicago, a national land-use and real estate consulting firm, have been honored with a 2012 William S. Ballard Award from The Counselors of Real Estate® (CRE®) for their article written for the organization’s journal, Real Estate Issues®. The winners are: Richard J. Roddewig, CRE, president; Gary R. Papke, CRE, senior vice president; and Charles T. Brigden, CRE, vice president. The honor is bestowed annually in recognition of the author(s) whose work best exemplifies the high standards of content maintained in the organization’s 36-year old professional journal.

The authors’ case study, entitled “Determining Real Estate Damages from Natural Disasters: Real Estate Counseling in Class Action Litigation—Lessons from Hurricane Katrina,” addresses the role that real estate counselors played in assessing damages by property type, physical construction, uses, neighborhoods, wind, rain, flooding and other factors, in litigation related to determining fair and accurate damages.

As president of Clarion Associates, Inc., Roddewig has more than 30 years of experience as a real estate counselor and works on counseling assignments across the United States. He specializes in expert testimony in large real estate-related litigation assignments. Roddewig has authored, co-authored, edited or contributed to 11 books and more than 50 articles in professional journals. He has an undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame, and both a master’s degree and a juris doctor from the University of Chicago.

Papke, who is senior vice president of the firm, has more than 25 years of experience as a real estate and planning counselor, following a ten-year career as a public sector planner. In recent years, he has focused much of his work on analysis of the impact of environmental contamination on real estate. He has published articles in The Appraisal Journal and Planning magazine, and has been an adjunct lecturer at the University of Illinois at Chicago and at DePaul University. Papke holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Gustavus Adolphus College and a master’s degree in urban planning from the University of Illinois.

Brigden, who is vice president of Clarion Associates, has 20 years of experience in real estate counseling and development economics, including major real estate valuation and consulting assignments in more than 25 states. Brigden directs the firm’s valuation and analytical efforts involving large-scale environmental contamination assignments. He holds a bachelor’s degree in architecture and a master of science degree in real estate, both from the University of Wisconsin.

Funding for the Ballard Award is provided by the William S. Ballard Scholarship Fund in memory of the late Mr. Ballard, also a Counselor of Real Estate. The review panel considered all manuscripts published in 2012 editions of Real Estate Issues before selecting the award winner.
