Community organizer is first-ever Hispanic CHA resident to sit on Board of Commissioners
Cristina Matos, the first-ever Hispanic resident to serve on the Chicago Housing Authority Board of Commissioners, made her first appearance as an official Board member Tuesday at CHA’s monthly board meeting. Matos, a resident of CHA’s Southeast Scattered Sites, was appointed by Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Nov. 16, 2016 and will complete the term of retired former Commissioner Harriet Johnson. She will serve until July 7, 2019
2017 CHA Scholarship Program kicks off; public housing college students can apply until May...
Starting today, CHA residents are encouraged to apply for one of more than 200 college scholarship awards ranging from $1,000 to $2,500. The 2017 CHA Scholarship application period is now open through May 17, 2017. In the last three years, CHA has provided support to 534 recipients totaling almost $850,000. Chicago Area Selected as Study Site for 2017 ULI Hines Student Competition
An area adjacent to the North Branch of the Chicago River has been selected as the study site in the Urban Land Institute’s (ULI) 15th annual ULI Hines Student Competition. The ideas competition – based in reality with certain details changed for the purposes of the challenge – provides both full- and part-time graduate-level student teams the opportunity to devise a comprehensive design and development program for parts of a real, large-scale site.

Last February, CHA CEO Eugene Jones, Jr. pledged in writing to replace 525 units of housing at Lathrop Homes by providing new housing units in North Side communities. Today, CHA and BPI reached an agreement in federal court that will enable CHA to meet its commitment to those 525 units by building 420 family units and 105 senior units. CHA has committed to building an additional 105 units of family housing in North Side neighborhoods for a total of 630 units of housing.
